Description
The Fox Point Veterans Memorial was first proposed to be a "living memorial" that would be an addition to the Providence Public Library. In addition, the memorial was proposed to reap economic benefits for the families of the veterans. Neither of these ideas were incorporated into the final version of the memorial. The creation of the Fox Point Veterans Memorial was administered by the state of Rhode Island and paid for by the people of Providence. Aristide Berto Cianfarani, an Italian sculptor, known for his monuments and war memorials, created the Fox Point Veterans Memorial. The memorial mediums are granite and bronze. Low-relief bronze images are on both sides of the memorial.
One side features four soldiers carrying rifles. They represent the four branches of military service: the Navy, Army, Armed Forces, and Marines. The four men are dressed in combat wear, including thick jackets and combat boots. The men have Eurocentric features, with small noses and thin lips. The other side of the memorial features four female military personnel carrying satchels. The narrow sides of the granite memorial feature olive branches, a symbol of peace. In addition, the memorial includes a bald eagle attached to the top. The eagle faces towards the bridge, looking West. The eagle has been a central discussion point amongst the community of Providence World War II veterans. Public forums indicate that for the interim period before the memorial's move to the current location, the eagle became damaged, and there were calls from the community to restore it to its original condition for an estimated cost of a thousand dollars.
