About

Commemorative Works of Providence is a project created and written by undergraduates students in Professor Renee Ater's course on monuments, history, and memory offered in Fall 2022 at Brown University.

Working with the Art, Culture + Tourism division of the City of Providence and the Rhode Island Historical Society, the class documented twelve commemorative works in downtown Providence. Each student created an exhibit on an individual monument. You can find the student essays under the "Exhibit" tab at the top of the page.

The project also serves as a beta test for a larger inventory of the commemorative landscape in Providence that the city will undertake in the upcoming year.
